Should owners leave their dogs tied up outside on their own while they shop, lunch etc?

DANNY OUR DOGGIES NANNY LOOK OUT FOR OUR SAFETY & TEACHING US HOW TO BE SAFE AT ALL TIMES

GOOD AFTERNOON MY FINE FURRY FRIENDS
Lord Captain Bowes Rees dutifully reporting in about our

BIG Voyage getting ready to get under way our Doggies nanny Danny is all about Safety tips these days and today it was all about not being left in cars or tied up at any Restaurants while our parents are dinning. There are many reasons as you will read another safety tip Danny is always preaching to us four legged charges is the BUDDY SYSTEM and we must practice it for ten minutes every day until we leave for our big trip around this big world. It sure is getting close and I and the rest of the gang is getting excited soon my Mum said we will start to go shopping for new toys and rain coats. I am so excited!

That is it for today here in sunny Los Angeles, and as we say in London, Ta-ta, Cheerio,

The Answer is NO NO nearer should you leave a dog tied up! For several reasons
1. This can let an animal feeling abandon
2. This can make an animal feel aggressive and lead to an animal biting a child who stops to pet it or an adult who stops to pet it and see if it is OK.
3. This can lead to the dog overheating and could get heat stroke and die
There are many rules some unwritten and now today in some states like California where it is now LAW that you never leave you Dog or any animal in an unattended car for any amount of time this will lead to a fine and passable a stint in jail.

The same goes for when you tie up a dog it is cruel to the dog. Many people will tell you “ My dog is fine they understand I am just running in to get a coffee” the facts are simple that your dog can be stolen in 2 seconds like a child they can get hot or very cold they can get wet or hit by lightning. The rules are like having a child you would never leave your child tied up outside, please do not leave your dog tied up outside.
As for the dog I is my humble options as to what each dog is going through as some type of dog personalities do not seem to mind the occasional waiting for their owner where other dogs cannot stand to wait one minute the facts are we cannot predict are animals they at the end of the day animals and you never really can fully trust them to always do exactly what you want them to do all the time unless you are with them to show them what to do.
As for the owners/humans the type of person who leaves there dog tied up for an hour lunch is a selfish owner but they really think they are a selfless owner and they think they are doing what is best for their dog by taking their dog with them and not leaving the dog at home. It is the same person who take the dog with them in the car everywhere they go and do not realize just how hot the car get in the summer and how cold the car get in the winter months. The difference in tempters in the car can be up to 30° degrees. It why many states have now put it into law that no animals are to be left alone in any vehicles

Danny the Dog Nanny
And His Belgium Boat Italian Biscotti

Hello, Boys and Girls. This is Danny the Dog Nanny. One of the most important items I like to pack for the Boys and the one lucky lady who will be traveling with us on our Voyage is a nice hard biscuit that will not go stale on me. Often many of the ports we stop at, I find that one (if not all) of my charges do not particularly like the cuisine of the country we are visiting.

Now one of my hard fast rules, which my four-legged charges know and that their “parents” must agree with before we set sail or I become a full-time doggie nanny for them; is that at every country and port we stop at, my four-legged charges will at least try the homeland cuisine and not turn up their snouts before tasting the food.

You just never know as young puppies and young adults, your taste buds are forever changing on a daily basis and a food item you did not like last month, you very likely could like today in South America with different seasonings. This is why the families that hire me never seem to have a problem with that line in my hiring contract.

Now I make my biscottis for two reasons, the first is when we are at sea; they make a wonderful breakfast and a great biscuit for afternoon tea. The second reason being, that if one of my four-legged charges has tried the local cuisine and really does not like the food then they are allowed to have them for a meal with vegetables, and I then give Cook permission to cook them a meal on board ship for whomever will be dining aboard the ship.

Belgium Boat Italian Biscotti

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup dark rye flour
1 ¼ cups whole wheat flour
½ cup each: oats, buckwheat flour and barley flakes
¼ cup plain wheat germ
1/3 cup sunflower seeds, shelled
2 tablespoons dark molasses
¼ tsp baking soda
¼ tsp baking powder
2 tablespoons olive oil (Note: do not use extra virgin oil for this, as it has a lower burn temperature than regular olive oil, and is not as good for baking. Regular olive oil is wonderful for this recipe and less expensive to boot.)
2 tablespoons water
1 large egg (extra large is fine also)
2 tsp vanilla
½ cup chopped dried apple
½ cup dried banana, chopped (fresh banana should be chopped & frozen before using)
½ cup of fresh carrots, shredded (make sure they are slim shreds)
¼ cup flax seed
Non-stick spray for cookie sheet

DIRECTIONS:
1. Pre-heat oven to 350°
2. Spray one large cookie sheet with non-stick spray
3. In large bowl combine all dry ingredients: flours, wheat germ, sunflower seeds,
Baking soda and baking powder, set aside.
4. In a blender or food processor puree the egg, vanilla and olive oil to emulsify.
5. Add all other ingredients to blender and blend well, until they are almost the size of small chunks, then add the fruit and mix well.
6. Now add all the wet ingredients into the bowl of flours and other ingredients.
7. Knead dough until it will hold together well, just do not over knead.
8. Cut the dough in half so you have equal amounts.
9. Shape into a “meatloaf” shape, without the loaf pan.
10. Place both dough loaves on the greased cookie sheet.
11. Flatten the loaves a bit (keeping in mind that you want them to look like a
Biscotti)
12. Now take a slim fork to poke holes on top of your loaves. I poke a few holes on the
Sides too Also do not place them too closely to each other when baking, as you want
To have a bit of room between the loaves. (See picture below)
13. Bake the loaves in the oven for 40 minutes or until golden brown and firm to the touch.
Do not let them burn.
14. Remove them from oven and let cool for at least 1 hour. Turn your oven down to 300°,
but do not turn off, as you still have more baking to do.
15. Once loaves are cool, get a bread knife and slice the Biscotti into ¼ inch thick slices
(See picture below).
16. Place sliced biscotti on cookie sheet and bake again. It should take about 30 minutes,
Until they are golden brown and hard. If you are at a high altitude it may take a bit
longer. If you are at sea level, it may take only 20 minutes.
17. Turn off your oven to let them dry out longer, but make sure they do not burn. You
want them to dry out as this will give them more flavors and harden for your dogs to
give them more crunches. This also helps remove the moisture, which is one of the
reasons homemade cookies don’t last as long. The trick is to get them dried out enough.

I like to store them in an airtight container and my favorite thing to use is my Reynolds Handi-Vac® storage system that takes all the air out. This will allow them to keep for up to 6 months in the freezer. Just take out what you want to use for the day, and they will return to room temperature quickly.

I love to give them to my boys on a summer day when they are fresh out of the freezer. They make a great treat on a hot summer day.

With this Biscotti recipe you can add any ingredients you want, from dried meats to veggies; just keep the dry ingredients the same and create away.

I hope you and your four-legged kids enjoy these treats as much as my Boys love them. I always use this recipe for gift giving, as they are easy to make, look beautiful and most of all they taste great!

If you have to evacuate from your home with your dog, will you know what to do? Do you have an evacuation plan?

If you have to evacuate from your home with your dog, will you know what to do? Do you have an evacuation plan?
Cappy & The Gang wanted to take this time to talk about a topic that they feel we all may have talked about in the past, but feel this is so important; we should update this and go over how and why we need to be prepared all the time for an emergency evacuation with our pets.On October 14th of 2008, here in Los Angeles, twenty minutes before I was to go on my weekly radio show, I heard overhead via a fire/police helicopter to be prepared to evacuate, as we were now being put on an evacuation watch. For those of you who don’t live in California this means get ready to evacuate with our pets and what personal belongings we could get ready to take with us. I had to call the radio station 20 minutes before going on live, and tell them I am now on a watch and I would not be able to do my show which they completely understood. I then started to get the three boys ready.I had been watching television for the past twenty-four hours and was very much aware of all the fire storms happening around me, but the fires were at least forty miles away and I thought I personally was safe. I knew some of my family who lived closer to the fires had been evacuated, but I still did not think they would get as close to where I lived in Los Angeles. Imagine my surprise I then received a knock on my front door and was told by a fire marshal to be ready to evacuate with no more than a thirty minute (if that) warning. The new fire was now 1 mile away from my neighborhood and it is time to really figure all this out. I have had been in 2 big earthquakes and I also had been in a fire evacuation before but I also had a husband to help me and this time everything was and is very different in my life which is why I am here today to help you to always be ready to God forbid you have to evacuate with you and your pets safely. The good news here is they wonderful fire men did get our fires out and the boys and myself are fine today but the message of being ready is one that is so important lets go over what to do and what you need to have on hand.I always talk about the important of having a first aid kit in your home and car. It is also a good idea of you are a camper or go boating to have a first aid kit in the camper and on the boat, which should also have a “doggie” life vest if Fido goes boating with you. When it comes to evacuating there are different things you will need to take with you, which is why a plan is so very important, because God forbid if your home is damaged you could lose some very important papers you many never be able to get back. For example you may not be able to recover your dog’s registration papers if you have an AKC registered dog. The same can be true if you adopted your dog, you may not be able to get papers replaced from the ASPCA or a place you can retrieve the information back from. Here is what you need to do when it is calm, and there is not an emergency going on, in order to always be prepared. If you live as I do in the earthquake and fire country then you want to have an earthquake box filled and ready to be used at a moment’s notice. Remember to always have plenty of food and water, not only for you but for Fido also as a dog can go two weeks with little to no food but they cannot go for more than twenty-four hours without water, as they will die. So water is very, very important to have stored, and always have extra water in any vehicles you are driving.Another important item to always have copies of is your dog’s shot records. In the case you have to evacuate and travel to another place due to a hurricane or flood, and then they will ask for a health certificate for your dog. You may not have that as they are usually only good for thirty days. However, a current shot record will help a new vet know exactly what inoculations your dog has had, and what they may need in order to get to another place or stay in a kennel if the emergency calls for that.HERE IS WHAT TO HAVE READY IN CASE YOU HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR HOMEPictures – this is something you cannot replace for you, your family and for Fido. So if you need to evacuate it is a good idea to try to keep your photo albums in one place; in case you need to go, you can grab all of them place them in a box and off you go with your memories and your loved ones with you. The material things can always be replaced, but the things you cannot replace; these are what you need to be known: where they are and are able to get them packed quickly.Shots recordsLeashes collars with up to date tagsExtra stainless steel bowls food and waterTowels for the carDog bedFood – Kibble and canned enough for two weeks is what the Red Cross recommends to keep on hand. They also recommend rotating the food and water every year to make sure it stays fresh and is still usable. It is a good idea to always keep your car with if not a full tank of gas, at least half a tank. I play this game with myself especially because gas is so very expensive I cannot always afford to fill my car. I fill up my car to full then when I get to the half tank I let myself know we are almost out of gas and then if I can only do $15 dollars on that day I still am more on the full side versus being on the empty side, in the case we have to drive and leave I know I have enough gas to get a good 200 miles away until I have to stop for fuel. Try this game I can promise you that it will come handy for you even if you never have to evacuate. You will never run out of gas at the wrong time and if you are a woman driving at night alone, again this is just a great safety measure to remember.Another good idea is to have a plan practice fire drills with your family and be ready if it is just you and your dog/dogs like it is with me. We have a plan and we practice this once a month, not to make some big deal but once a month I make sure I know where everything important is and I make sure when I call the boys they come right away! This is on-going training and dogs love to keep their minds active as well as their bodies. So what I do is practice a game with the boys, as each dog is well-trained alone. It is when all three get on leashes that I need them to be calm and not going wild with excitement, because they think they are off to the beach, or swimming, to a pool or park.I need them to be trained and calm at all times so we practice getting all our leashes on and staying calm. Sometimes we do not go out, sometimes we do; the simple fact is now the boys are trained to know when I call for a walk or anything that involves getting ready to go out with leashes on they have learned to all sit and wait their turn to have their leashes put on. If they get all hyper we start all over again until all four of us get it right. This is why I say practice this is a training tool that I promise you will come in very handy. You may say my dog heels beautiful or my dog is calm, when I say let’s go for a walk; but if you know your dog can easily get nervous or excited then you want to start to train him/her to be calm when it comes time to go out or into the car. This way in case of an emergency you will always have full control of Fido and the both of you can get into the car calmly and move to a safe area never having to worry about the safety of your dog.Trust me; my boys can be a wild PACK. Yes I said pack, this is what it is called when you own more than one dog and with three dogs I do have a pack and if one dog get excited then all three start so I must be the leader of my pack and I must practice all the time to make sure my pack is listening and ready to go. I do have a release word for the boys it is “OK”, and when they all hear the release word in the happy tone I use, then and only then do they know “OK it is time to play and we are released from the working mind set we are in at that time”. This is one of the best tools you can teach, to have ready in case you do have to ever leave your home in an emergency.I hope you never have to evacuate, but in case you do the best plan is to be ready and to always remember no matter how prepared we sometimes are, things can and will go wrong, so by not stressing out too much, the best one can do is to try to be prepared and have a sense of humor. As they say “We make plans and then God breaks them”. If that is the case, know you have trained your dog and you have practice for an emergency. No matter what you can take with you or have to leave behind, what you do know is you both are ready and well trained.See training never ends, it just becomes different and you can always find a new idea to train your dog. You can never have too many tools and you can never train your dog too much. Remember, just never do it for more than a few minutes a few times a day. Do not try to train your dog in one day with an eight hour session, as this will not work for either of you. Start off with five minutes a day, work it up to ten minutes a day and then maybe add another session so you have training time twice a day with your dog, but please, as with everything else go slowly and know you are both learning to be prepared.
