Thank you for Thanksgiving

I’ve just had the most amazing holiday this thanksgiving, with all my friends, family and a few paws I didn’t know. We talked, we PLAYED and laughed all day, it was wonderful. We tend to forget, well I do of the importance of friends and family whilst we carry out our usual, busy daily routines like going for a walk down to the beach playing ball. By the way the long sandy path leading to the beach is becoming much rougher since the humans decided to mix in a few larger pebbles to make it easier for them to walk down. They forget we have little paws and do NOT wear sandals to protect our little feet, it hurts. So to all the humans out there, please think of your four legged friends whilst you are planning to make life easier for yourselves. That’s my little rant for the day, back to the great holidays. Peachy, who is a beautiful Labrador was so funny, Prince of Morocco, Gomez, Mom and Pa had just had the pool cleaned and re-filled with fresh sparkling water, so every time their backs where turned and not looking he would jump in, Splish, Splash, Splash everywhere and before you knew it we all followed. It was brilliant so, so much fun! we all loved it.

Just before I go as my Mom is calling, I would like to thank Mom and Pa for taking me to the “Castle” for thanksgiving and for all the lovely food, especially those crunchy new biscuits they were great. Also I would like to say thank you to Gomez for inviting all those lovely new friends to the party.

Foods That Will Upset Your Stomach

Good Old Senator AKA Senny

Little Lady

Prince Gomez

Little Man

GOOD MORNING MY FINE FURRY FRIENDS Lord Captain Bowes Rees Cappy the traveling Terrier
Lord Captain Bowes Rees Dutifully reporting in about our
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones! We wish for everyone to have a great day. We are counting our blessings today and giving thanks for our family and all the wonderful things in our lives.

The Prince of Morocco Gomez is hosting our thanksgiving Dinner today at his new castle and we are more than excited to be going there to eat our feast. With more than 65 hectors of rolling green grass for us to run and play on to build up our appetites on we will be thinking about our furry friends less fortunate than us and we will be taking a moment to break and to give thanks. Lord Captain Bowes Rees & his Friends lend a paw ©2009
We wish you and your family a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving.
Thank you for helping us to get ready for our voyage around the world we leave this coming summer. Remember my Furry Friends to stay away from the Foods That Will Upset Your Stomach I have put a list together for you and try not to over eat we can tend to do that I know Senny never know when to stop.

1. Never feed us furry Fido Friends from the table and this is no different than any other time of the year, we like to eat our meals with our friends just so long as they do not steel our food and they have manners as my extended family does. When we all get together and have a feast like today the only Dog that must eat alone is Senny that is because he is just such a fast eater that he finishes first and then comes by to sit and wait with drool dripping down his side mouth, which then makes us all feel guilty so we all run to give him our meals. Then one of our parents come in to say “Oh no Senny all ready ate” so he tricked us again to get a second, third, fourth and fifth meal. That is why Senny eats alone now.
2. Know what human foods will kill myself and my furry Fido Friends and what food that will make us dogs very sick foods, such as turkey bones , skin, grapes, raisins, chocolate, and onions, can be killer for us dogs. If you want us dogs to be a part of the feasting, consider buying us a special dog treats or share a small piece of white turkey meat, dark turkey meat, sweat potatoes, peas and any other veggies but make sure the seasoning is safe! Remember NO onions
3. Your trash is more than like to be over flowing at the holidays and this is just too tempting for us Fido food loving friends so please if ever a time to be diligent about your trash it is now!! Secure the garbage! The scents coming from the trash can are just as tempting as those coming from the dinner table, but dangerous objects, such as Turkey Bones, string, and pop-up timers, are often attached to those tasty scraps.
4. Please make sure all our dog tags are up to date, registered and you can read them. Please then make sure you have made them well attached.
5. Please if you have should have a visitor that feel shy then make a safe room for them in your home away from all the festivals so they feel safe and they too can have a happy time. Make up there den and let them hang out in it.
6. Take a ton of great family Pictures with us Fido friendly pets we always remember what a great time we had with each other.
7. Write in your journal
8. Please let your guest know about us Fido Friendly Pets and never let us slide out the door or window.
9. Always have our vets phone number up where everyone can see it and the poison control number and if our vet is not a 24/7 emergency then be sure to have that number
10. If on this Holiday you should come across a lost doggie or cat please bring him/her to a safe NO KILL shelter and be sure to call every local pet rescue you can find. I am sure you would want the same if your doggie was missing.
11. Know the signs when we do not feel well for example when I am experiencing diarrhea, vomiting, or displaying other unusual behaviors, this sometimes means I may have ingested something harmful. Seek medical assistance immediately if you become concerned. I cannot use the same words you use but we seem to communicate very well most of the time so just keep a close eye out for my well being and I will do the same for you at all times- I think this is why they say we are Best Friends!!

Oh and the simple fact I just LOVE my mum!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

That is it for today here in sunny(about 100 ° here or feel like it to me )Los Angeles, and as we say in London, Ta-ta, Cheerio,

Do not Let The Holidays Allow You Slide On being safe

If you have to evacuate from your home with your dog, will you know what to do? Do you have an evacuation plan? Even with Holidays Coming we still need to be ready at all times and please do not let all the HOLIDAY THINGS CLOG UP YOUR EXIT WAY

I wanted to take time this week to talk about a topic that we may have talked about in the past, but I feel this is so important; we should update this and go over how and why we need to be prepared all the time for an emergency evacuation with our pets.

I always talk about the important of having a first aid kit in your home and car. It is also a good idea of you are a camper or go boating to have a first aid kit in the camper and on the boat, which should also have a “dogie” life vest if Fido goes boating with you. When it comes to evacuating there are different things you will need to take with you, which is why a plan is so very important, because God forbid if your home is damaged you could lose some very important papers you many never be able to get back.

For example you may not be able to recover your dog’s registration papers if you have an AKC registered dog. The same can be true if you adopted your dog, you may not be able to get papers replaced from the ASPCA or a place you can retrieve the information back from.

Here is what you need to do when it is calm, and there is not an emergency going on, in order to always be prepared. If you live as I do in the earthquake and fire country then you want to have an earthquake box filled and ready to be used at a moments notice. Remember to always have plenty of food and water, not only for you but for Fido also as a dog can go two weeks with little to no food but they cannot go for more than twenty-four hours without water, as they will die. So water is very, very important to have stored, and always have extra water in any vehicles you are driving.

Another important item to always have copies of is your dog’s shot records. In the case you have to evacuate and travel to another place due to a hurricane or flood, and then they will ask for a health certificate for your dog. You may not have that as they are usually only good for thirty days. However, a current shot record will help a new vet know exactly what inoculations your dog has had, and what they may need in order to get to another place or stay in a kennel if the emergency calls for that.

HERE IS WHAT TO HAVE READY IN CASE YOU HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR HOME
Pictures – this is something you cannot replace for you, your family and for Fido. So if you need to evacuate it is a good idea to try to keep your photo albums in one place; in case you need to go, you can grab all of them place them in a box and off you go with your memories and your loved ones with you. The material things can always be replaced, but the things you cannot replace, these are what you need to be know: where they are and be able to get them packed quickly.
Shots records
Leashes collars with up to date tags
Extra stainless steel bowls food and water
Towels for the car
Dog bed
Food – Kibble and canned enough for two weeks is what the Red Cross recommends to keep on hand. They also recommend rotating the food and water every year to make sure it stays fresh and is still usable.

It is a good idea to always keep your car with if not a full tank of gas, at least half a tank. I play this game with myself especially because gas is so very expensive I cannot always afford to fill my car. I fill up my car to full then when I get to the half tank I let myself know we are almost out of gas and then if I can only do $15 dollars on that day I still am more on the full side versus being on the empty side, in the case we have to drive and leave I know I have enough gas to get a good 200 miles away until I have to stop for fuel. Try this game I can promise you that it will come handy for you even if you never have to evacuate. You will never run out of gas at the wrong time and if you are a woman driving at night alone, again this is just a great safety measure to remember.

Another good idea is to have a plan practice fire drills with your family and be ready if it is just you and your dog/dogs like it is with me. We have a plan and we practice this once a month, not to make some big deal but once a month I make sure I know where everything important is and I make sure when I call the boys they come right away! This is on-going training and dogs love to keep their minds active as well as their bodies. So what I do is practice a game with the boys, as each dog is well-trained alone. It is when all three get on leashes that I need them to be calm and not going wild with excitement, because they think they are off to the beach, or swimming, to a pool or park.

I need them to be trained and calm at all times so we practice getting all our leashes on and staying clam. Sometimes we do not go out, sometimes we do; the simple fact is now the boys are trained to know when I call for a walk or anything that involves getting ready to go out with leashes on they have learned to all sit and wait their turn to have their leashes put on. If they get all hyper we start all over again until all four of us get it right. This is why I say practice this is a training tool that I promise you will come in very handy.

You may say my dog heels beautiful or my dog is calm, when I say let’s go for a walk; but if you know your dog can easily get nervous or excited then you want to start to train him/her to be calm when it comes time to go out or into the car. This way in case of an emergency you will always have full control of Fido and the both of you can get into the car calmly and move to a safe area never having to worry about the safety of your dog.

Trust me; my boys can be a wild PACK. Yes I said pack, this is what it is called when you own more than one dog and with three dogs I do have a pack and if one dog get excited then all three start so I must be the leader of my pack and I must practice all the time to make sure my pack is listening and ready to go. I do have a release word for the boys it is “OK”, and when they all hear the release word in the happy tone I use, then and only then do they know “OK it is time to play and we are released from the working mind set we are in at that time”. This is one of the best tools you can teach, to have ready in case you do have to ever leave your home in an emergency.

I hope you never have to evacuate, but in case you do the best plan is to be ready and to always remember no matter how prepared we sometimes are, things can and will go wrong, so by not stressing out too much, the best one can do is to try to be prepared and have a sense of humor. As they say “We make plans and then God breaks them”. If that is the case, know you have trained your dog and you have practice for an emergency. No matter what you can take with you or have to leave behind, what you do know is you both are ready and well trained.

See training never ends, it just becomes different and you can always find a new idea to train your dog. You can never have too many tools and you can never train your dog too much. Remember, just never do it for more than a few minutes a few times a day. Do not try to train your dog in one day with an eight hour session, as this will not work for either of you. Start off with five minutes a day, work it up to ten minutes a day and then maybe add another session so you have training time twice a day with your dog, but please, as with everything else go slowly and know you are both learning to be prepared.

Greyhounds Need to Find Homes-- SOON!!

Dairyland Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha, Wisconsin will be closing on December 31, 2009.

900 Greyhounds will need to be adopted otherwise they will be euthanized, now is a great time to consider adopting a Greyhound. They are very loving and laid back. They don’t need the space people think they need. They are great for an active family because they have been crated almost all their lives and they sleep about 18 out of the 24 hours a day. They are just looking for someone to love them and supply them with a warm bed!!!! They test the dogs to see if they are cat friendly and or small dog friendly. They also know if a dog should be a single dog or if they would be great in a 2, 3, or 4 dog house!!! Please help me get the word out; we only have 6 weeks to get this task done.

Announcing Relase of Second Book in Frankie, the Walk 'N Roll Dog Book Series!

Author Releases Second Book to Inspire Children and Seniors Who Have Special Needs or Disabilities

Author Barbara Techel and her 10-year-old daschund announce the release of their second book, Frankie The Walk ‘N Roll Therapy Dog Visits Libby’s House.

We all face challenges in life, but dealing them is much easier when there’s support and understanding from significant others—even animals. Frankie is a dachshund who is paralyzed in her hind quarters as a result of an injury. But, she does not allow her physical challenges to limit her purpose or her gift of healing to others. Custom-fitted for a doggie wheelchair (dog cart), Frankie The Walk ‘N Roll Therapy Dog uses her disability to bring a message of hope and encouragement to young and old.

Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Therapy Dog Visits Libby’s House is a true story told from a therapy dog’s viewpoint. This, the second book in the series, tells how Frankie became a registered therapy dog and gives several personal accounts of her visits to the residents of Libby’s House, a senior facility where many residents have Alzheimer’s or dementia http://www.libbyshouse.com/.

Frankie’s human mom and the book’s author, Barbara Techel, hoped for years to have a therapy dog and share the love that only a dog can bring. She wanted the dog to visit people who may not have animal contact on a regular basis.

“When Frankie was fitted for a doggie wheelchair, I wrote the first book and started taking her to local schools to entertain children,” says Barbara. “I realized Frankie would make a great therapy dog for adults as well as children. The fact that she is in a wheelchair makes her a bit more unique as she helps people in nursing homes, hospitals, and hospice identify on a deeper level. She has a challenge like many of them.”

Visiting Libby’s House once a month opened Barbara’s heart and eyes to realizing that people may not always understand what the elderly are going through, and all they want is someone to listen and spend time with them.

“I especially want children to not fear seniors who face the challenges brought on by aging,” says Ms. Techel. “I hope to encourage children to spend and cherish time with their own grandparents. I hope children will realize the beauty and wisdom in the elderly.”

“All one needs to do is see the expression in the eyes of those Frankie touches to know she is tangible love,” says Christine Thill, owner and RN administrator of Libby’s House where Frankie volunteers. “When the body fails, the spirit soars! Frankie’s visits along with Barb’s gentle nature are a true blessing to Libby’s House.”

Because she is bringing positive awareness to animals with disabilities through her therapy dog work, Frankie was awarded the Wisconsin Pet Hall of Fame Companion and is the official mascot for National Disabled Pets Day. This little dog teaches us that patience, listening, and understanding opens our hearts to what matters most—love.

Through Frankie’s example, Barbara hopes to encourage anyone facing a challenge.
Having a disability does not mean we don’t have gifts to offer. Each of us can give back to the world in our own, unique way. Frankie’s volunteer work is a great way to prompt others to get involved in their own communities and find a way to be of service. Barbara says the rewards are beyond anything she could have ever imagined.

Even though she and Frankie visit Libby’s House once a month, Barbara still enjoys sharing with children the messages in her books. In fact, she has found a new way to share Frankie’s story via Skype an Author Network whose mission is to provide K-12 teachers and librarians with a way to connect authors, books, and young readers through virtual classroom visits. See
